Opening of restaurants during Corona – the sound of the background music is also important

Gastronomieöffnung während Corona – auch auf den Sound der Hintergrundmusik kommt es an

Since mid-May, the first restaurants across the country have been reopening. The requirements are high and sophisticated hygiene concepts apply. As a result, the reopening of the catering industry is taking place under difficult conditions. Many restaurateurs report a completely new phenomenon that is caused by the greater distance between tables: the smaller number of guests and tables to be served means that the usual noise level is reduced.

This increases the atmospheric and balancing importance of background music, because music supports the guests' emotional identification with the restaurant and its culinary offerings. If it is too quiet, no emotional transfer takes place and guests may feel like they are being watched by others. If it is too loud, it hinders communication at the table and with the staff. In both cases, it distracts from enjoyment, so only an ideal volume that remains constant over time will lead to success.

GOSCH – Gastronomer of the Year 2020 – uses new technology

The well-known fish restaurants of the GOSCH restaurant brand are now open again after a long break. The "observation effect" caused by greater emptiness can also be confirmed by the authorized representative Michael Lorenzen. In List on Sylt, the "northernmost fish stall in Germany" is usually crowded with tourists. This is currently not possible with the hygiene rules. "Especially now, when the distance rules have to be observed, the right volume of the music is important. It has to be loud enough to create enough atmosphere, but must not lead to the guests having to get too close to each other to talk. We decided to use an HDSX box before Corona and see the stable volume of the background music as a real added value."

The HDSX box is a technical innovation that has only recently become available. With it, the problem of fluctuating volume of background music is a thing of the past. The music always has the same fixed volume that was set once, regardless of the genre of music being played in the program and regardless of whether it is a verse, intro or finale.

Always the right volume of music in “Schuback am Park”

Jens Manzel, owner of the "Schuback am Park" in Hamburg, is also happy that things are starting up again. With a lot of creativity, Manzel and his team managed to solve all the requirements for the opening and thus organize a new operation. The restart was good, but as is so often the case, the devil is in the detail. "With the restrictions on the number of seats, we can only operate with a partial team. Otherwise it is not possible. In addition, the guests who come to us have to register, disinfect their hands and wear a mouth and nose mask on the way to the table. Only when they are seated does the relaxing and desired effect of 'eating out' begin. Until then, some atmospheric hurdles have to be overcome."

This was apparently no obstacle for the guests of the "Schuback am Park", as the first few days were well received. The operator also sees the musical atmosphere in his restaurant as a reason for this popularity: "For us, music is part of the overall concept, which is why we attach great importance to the right choice of music and the perfect volume. With the HDSX box, we can guarantee a consistent sound atmosphere across the entire restaurant area without it being too loud and thus disrupting communication between guests at the tables. It's all about finding the right balance - and the HDSX box works absolutely reliably."

The right mood with HDSX

Gunnar Kron is the inventor of the HDSX-box and CEO of Kronoton. He has observed an increasing interest in the HDSX-box as restaurants reopen.

The problem of fluctuating volume of background music is known to everyone who works in restaurants, bars, cafes or hotels. But especially now, under the difficult conditions caused by Corona, the importance of the right volume of music in the dining room is increasing enormously. "Most restaurateurs use background music consciously and choose the songs played very carefully so that the music fits the style of the house, the food and the desired atmosphere. That's why the HDSX box is so important, because it ensures that the selection also reaches the guest."

Kronoton sees itself as a partner of the catering industry and has developed a special service during the Corona period: "In the north, we visit the restaurateurs free of charge, install the HDSX box and adjust the entire area to the optimal volume. For other regions, we provide free telephone support. This solves the problem of the atmosphere."
